Can I get a loan if I am unemployed?

It can be possible to get a loan when you are unemployed if you have income and can afford the repayments. Having no job is not the same as having no income, but a lender must still decide whether lending to you is appropriate.

Loans for unemployed people are not a separate guarantee of acceptance. The phrase describes borrowing options for people who are out of work, including someone between jobs or receiving income from another source. Your income, existing commitments and credit history can all affect the decision.

Money Trumpet will pass your application to a lender or another broker. We do not make the lending decision or carry out an affordability assessment. The company handling your application will explain the information it needs and any offer available to you. Experian’s unemployed-loans guide explains why your ability to repay matters alongside employment status.

Before you borrow

What should I consider before applying without a job?

Base your decision on the money available to you now, not on income you hope to receive later.

Your regular income

Identify the income you actually receive, how often it arrives and whether it is likely to continue throughout the repayment period.

Your time between jobs

A short gap between jobs and an uncertain return to work create different budgeting pressures. A future job offer does not guarantee approval.

Room for repayments

Leave enough for housing, food, energy and other essentials. A repayment that uses your entire spare income leaves no buffer for unexpected costs.

What income can I show when I am unemployed?

Show the income you receive now and evidence of its amount and frequency. A lender might consider income other than wages, such as a pension or benefits, but acceptance depends on that lender’s criteria.

Money Trumpet does not promise that a particular source of income will be accepted. Savings or a redundancy payment are different from recurring income: a lump sum can run out, so explain it accurately rather than describing it as a monthly salary.

Income evidence checklist
What to checkWhat to prepareWhy it helps
Amount receivedThe actual amount paid to you, after any deductions.Avoids confusing gross earnings or an award figure with usable income.
Payment frequencyWhether money arrives weekly, every four weeks or monthly.Helps you check whether repayment dates fit your cash flow.
EvidenceRecent statements or relevant payment and entitlement documents, if requested.Allows the lender to verify the information you provide.
Expected changesAny known end date, reduction or confirmed change in income.Shows whether your current budget is likely to remain realistic.

Only provide documents through the secure process the company handling your application specifies. There is no need to send bank statements to Money Trumpet by ordinary email to begin an enquiry.

Do benefits count as income for a loan?

Some lenders consider benefit income, but they do not all accept the same payments or apply the same rules. You can also receive benefits while working, so employment status and benefit income are separate questions. Our loans for people on benefits page focuses on this income-specific topic.

Can I borrow money without a job or income?

Without income or another dependable means of repayment, a loan is unlikely to be an affordable solution. Do not rely on a new loan to cover an ongoing gap between essential bills and the money coming in. Check support options and speak to a free debt adviser if you are already falling behind.

You can plan your own budget without sharing it with Money Trumpet. Our guide to budgeting when unemployed helps you work out what remains after essentials.

How much can an unemployed person borrow?

You can apply through Money Trumpet for £100–£5,000, with repayment terms from 3–36 months. These are application limits, not a promise that every applicant will be offered every amount or term.

Choose an amount for a defined need and a repayment you can sustain. Borrowing more than necessary adds to the debt you must repay; choosing a longer term can lower individual repayments but can increase the total cost.

How much does a loan cost?

The cost depends on the offer, including the interest rate, term and any fees. Compare the APR and total amount repayable, not just the weekly or monthly payment. MoneyHelper explains personal-loan costs and what to check before agreeing.

In the supplied representative example, borrowing £200 means repaying £336 in total: £136 more than the amount borrowed. Your own offer may have different figures. Read the repayment schedule carefully, including the final payment and any charges.

Weekly payments and monthly payments are not directly interchangeable. Check how many payments are due and when they fall against your income dates, rather than treating every month as four weeks.

Can I get a loan with bad credit while unemployed?

It may be possible, but neither bad credit nor unemployment gives you automatic eligibility. A lender will consider your circumstances, including whether you can repay, rather than approving an application simply because it is marketed for bad credit.

Check your credit report for errors before applying and give accurate information about current income. Our bad credit loans page covers borrowing with a poor credit history; our guide explains how lenders make loan decisions.

Will completing the form affect my credit score?

Completing Money Trumpet’s application form does not involve a credit search by Money Trumpet and will not itself affect your credit score. A lender or another broker may carry out checks later in the process.

A soft search and a hard search have different effects. Ask the company handling your application what checks it will make and at what stage. Experian explains credit searches, including why multiple hard applications in a short period can matter.

We pass it on

Money Trumpet will pass your application to a lender or another broker. You receive an on-screen submission confirmation.

4

Discuss the next steps

Submission confirmation is not loan approval. Money Trumpet does not carry out credit searches or decide whether you can afford a loan. See how our service works for more about our role.

What alternatives should I check before borrowing while unemployed?

Check benefit entitlement, help with essential bills and any suitable interest-free government support before taking on commercial debt. A credit union or a payment arrangement may also be worth exploring, depending on your circumstances.

Help with income and essential costs

Use MoneyHelper’s benefits guidance to check what support may be available. If a bill is the immediate problem, ask the organisation you owe about help or a payment arrangement rather than assuming a new loan is your only option.

Government loans and advances

A Budgeting Loan may cover certain one-off costs if you receive qualifying benefits. Universal Credit claimants use a different route: check Budgeting Advance eligibility. These options have specific conditions and are generally repaid through benefit deductions, so check the effect on your future budget.

Credit union borrowing

A credit union may offer an alternative to high-cost borrowing, but membership and lending conditions apply. Some require a savings history before a loan. Read MoneyHelper’s credit union guidance before assuming you can borrow immediately.

Already struggling with debt?

Borrowing again can make a repayment problem worse. Contact your lender early and use MoneyHelper’s free debt-advice locator. Our unemployed and in debt guide explains practical next steps.

Your questions answered

Loans for unemployed people: FAQs

Can I apply if I am between jobs?

You can complete an application while between jobs. Describe your current situation accurately, including any income you receive now. A job offer or expected start date does not guarantee a loan.

Do I need to be receiving benefits to apply?

No. Being unemployed does not necessarily mean you receive benefits. You still need to provide accurate income information, and the lender must decide whether your circumstances meet its criteria.

Will I need proof of income?

The lender or broker handling your application may request evidence of the income you declare. The documents required depend on your circumstances and its process. Give current figures and do not describe one-off money as recurring income.

How quickly will I receive a decision or payment?

There is no guaranteed decision or payment time through Money Trumpet. The company handling your application needs to complete its process and any required checks. Do not plan an urgent bill payment around funds that have not been approved.

What if my application is declined?

A decline does not mean another application will succeed. Review your budget, check your credit report for errors and ask whether the company can explain its decision. Avoid making repeated applications without understanding the likely checks and costs.

What if I start a new job during the application?

Tell the company handling your application about the change and provide accurate updated information if requested. Do not enter expected wages as income you already receive.

Can I repay the loan early?

Ask the lender for its early repayment terms and a settlement figure. The amount required can differ from simply adding up the remaining instalments. Check whether any charges apply before paying.

What should I do if I lose my job after taking out a loan?

Contact your lender as soon as you expect difficulty paying and explain the change. Review essential spending and get free debt advice if needed. Our guide to dealing with creditors can help you prepare that conversation.
